Re: Anyone ever had a stroke

I get mine checked fairly regularly but sound advice.
I once did a medical drug test for one of these research companies. I was hooked up to a machine that was keeping an eye on blood pressure and heart rate - we were told we just had to lay there, no phones, no books, no TV - nothing that could affect you.
All of a sudden alarms were going off and a team of doctors and nurse ran into my room as my blood pressure had gone through the roof - pulse rate up from 40 to over 100. I hadn't even realised.
The reason?
On the other side of the room where I left my phone I could see a green light flashing. The green light was programmed to flash when I had had message from my ex-wife.
I hadn't a clue what the message was, but just knowing she had been in touch was enough to do that.
Lesson: Ex wives are bad for your health

On medication to keep it under control.
My GP says sometimes it just happens for no particular reason.
Then again, he's a cunt.
I related my episode to a few mates and they got their BP checked, one had sky high numbers as well.
So if anyone's reading this...
Get your blood pressure checked.
Most big supermarkets with a pharmacy will do it. Don't cost owt.

I remember you saying that - is it all sorted now?
What was the cause and how did they get it under control?

Curbs. Hope he makes a full recovery.
I had mine last christmas. Went in boxing day came home in the new year, must admit spending new year on the stroke ward was not on my bucket list. Was 56 at the time and sounds very similar to kips, no warning non smoker and no health issues, touch wood that the meds i am on now keep me safe.

This is a good reminder to everyone to get their blood pressure checked. If I hadn't got mine done in ASDA summat very bad would've happened. I was 250/143, rushed into hospital for 3 days. Didn't feel ill or owt.
That's why you hear of folk dropping dead or having strokes in their 30s and that.

Re: Anyone ever had a stroke

Curbs, I had a stroke almost 10 years ago.
It was out of the blue as I was fit, never smoked had normal blood pressure and low cholestral. Being 56 at the time they told me I had good chance of a virtually full recovery.
The neurological pathways that are damaged by the stroke do heal themselves gradually. The speed depends on your age and condition.
Depending what part of the brain is hit depends on what is damaged.
My speech and movement came back within a few days but my eyesight was worse and that got back to about 75% after about 6 to 9 months and after 10 years is at about 85%. It won't improve any more.
So it depends on the individual but all the rapid recovery seems to come within the first 6 months after that it is just a slower ever decreasing amount of recovery Hope that helps

Curbs, I knew he was in hospital but I didn't know he had a stroke, I hope he pulls through and it looks like you got him there as quick as possible, so hopefully no long term damage
Good luck to you both x

Through gritted teeth CLH I hope your old man makes a full recovery. Anti-coagulants for the rest of his life but a small price to pay for living with a wife who has West Ham running through her veins.
He doesn't know how lucky he is. His glory-hunting Chelsea wife (in another life) would fuck off once things got a little bit bent. As West Ham supporters know, we endure.
He's a lucky man babe. He doesn't realise it (yet) but he's lucky to have you.
All the best x

Re: Anyone ever had a stroke

If it was a TIA then he has a huge chance of making a full recovery
If it was a stroke the level of severity is obviously the factor
From what you say it sounds like he is already recovering which is a huge thing. Once his sitting balance is ok and his tone isn't high then you have avoided a lot of the physical problems that can be caused
Once he gets a bit better have a sit down and have a look at why it might have happened in the first place, repeat occurrences are very common. His diet, drinking/smoking, excerise, and also don't discount his stress levels and his personality (is he a person that gets angry, frustrated etc).
These are all to be taken into account so you can start making sure it doesn't happen again. And you'll have his full attention with the fright that he has gotten this time. Good luck. And make sure you are involved yourself in the medical meetings and introduce yourself to the physios that are taking care of them and ask them to show you what you can do to assist his rehab. They will be more than happy to show you, family involvement is hugely beneficial
With a TIA it should be taken as a tip off that you need to make changes to your life
Finally, he might be a bit crazy for the next while, personality change, overly sexual, short tempered, bad language at inappropriate times, saying stuff that is a bit hurtful. This is all normal depending on while part of the brain was affected
I'm not just spouting this off the top of my head, my wife runs a stroke unit in a hospital here in Dublin. I'm fairly up on the topic
Good luck and don't get too stressed, the rehab these days is superb
